Finding us

Llyn Gwynant Campsite is located in North Wales in Eryri National Park (formerly Snowdonia National Park) just 3 miles as the crow flies from the top of Yr Wyddfa (Mt Snowdon).

The campsite is accessed by taking a turn off the A498, just at the head of the lake, beside our large green campsite sign.

Large vehicles such as motorhomes can only access by taking a left-hand turn heading north (up the hill), and so you may need to turn in the layby beside the lake.

The Landranger grid reference for the campsite is SH649524. The Lat/Long is 53 03′ 08N, 4 01′ 01W. Note that a number of older SatNavs give incorrect locations for this postcode LL55 4NW and place the campsite at the wrong end of the lake! Google Maps and Ordnance Survey maps show the campsite correctly at the north end of the lake.

Car hire

Across North Wales, you’ll find various car hire venues. Car hire is ideal if you want to visit a specific area that’s off the beaten track. You can rent a car for just a day or longer.

Public transport

The nearest train stations are Porthmadog (connections with Birmingham and Shrewsbury) and Bangor, which is on the direct London/Euston–Holyhead and Cardiff–Holyhead routes.

All trains connect to buses: Bangor is the major North Wales station, but it requires several buses to get to the campsite: take the Sherpa’r Wyddfa S2 bus from Bangor to Pen y Pass, then change to the S4 going to Porthmadog, which takes you to the campsite (you’ll need to ask the driver to stop). From Porthmadog, the S4 bus to Pen y Pass passes the campsite.

The Sherpa’r Wyddfa buses are a network of routes around the Snowdon group of peaks. They include a route from Cardiff via Llanberis to Pen y Pass and another from Caernarfon to Beddgelert, where you can catch the S4 (Porthmadog to Pen y Pass) and up the Nantgwynant valley past the campsite to Pen-y-Pass. The buses will stop and pick up from the main A498 road in a layby near the campsite entrance on request. You can use the bus to get up the hill to Pen y Pass for a walk up Snowdon via the PYG or Miners track and it can pick you up at the end of a walk. Be aware that at the height of summer the buses passing the campsite may be full and so will not stop to pick up. For routes and timetables see the Sherpa’r Wyddfa bus website.
